« on: December 05, 2014, 01:59:55 PM »
Has anyone been on the G & S SPECIALIST TIMBER site to look at the hapfo PERFORMER 400-FU,looks like a serious piece of kit,3HP motor,403 mm centre height (806 mm swing) over the bed,yes you did read that right,it is that big,it also has a swivel head for doing even bigger work,it has a 1 m or 2 m bed lengths between centres and weighs 340 kilos or 440 kilos respectivley, the only trouble is it costs £5.982.00p inc vat for the short one or £6.637.00p inc vat for the long one,all sorts of extras can be bought to,cheers,

Eric.

Happy with my 3520 thanks  :)

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

There must be a point where the amount of swing becomes to much and the height of the head and tailstock, and especially the tool rest, introduce an instability or vibration. I wonder where that point would be.

Very valid point, Graham.

I've noted with a few lathes, that it's always the swing over the bed, some mention the limit over the slide.

There's a point as you've mentioned that it can be slid out and at which point it remains safe.  The distance can be more limiting than the swing over the bed/slide, a case with if I recall the vicmarc vl100 an the short slide.  It's one area for dimensions of given swing which isn't normally covered.

When I bought big, a few years ago, the one thing I didn't consider was the weight of the tailstock. Considerable is an understatement and as the years roll by removing it when hollowing deep has become a struggle.
Big just aint always boooootiful
