I'm sure I have seen guarded drive centres elsewhere before but I can't remember where I saw them. They seem like a good idea for some applications but my usual approach if I think I'm going to work close to the drive centre is to use a ring drive instead. They are much cheaper too!

In my opinion a steb center is better and does not require a guard
and at the price quoted cheaper

items from the USA also attract import duty and other handling charges. But I've no idea what that would equate to on this.

I think the duty is VAT rate at 20% plus an £8 collection fee for any purchase over £15 and they count the postage too!

Could you get one made up by a local metal shop?

Don't tell anyone if you did .. Patent & Copyright .. The cost for tooling a one off (if even accurate) would make it prohibitive.

Why bother with any of it? If I was doing a run of stuff like stair spindles I use a cone drive at each end, that way I don't have to turn the lathe off.

I don't see anything wrong with the steb centre anyway except that you may need 2 to cover different spindle sizes.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Just a tip...
When importing things from other countries ask the sender to mark the package as "sample", this seems to stop the import duty as its a sample, this is how I get some of my parts send that are unable to be sourcing the UK, hope this helps.

What another gimmick to get us to part with your hard earned cash has anyone ever had hair, loose clothing, jewellery or tools catch on a 4 prong drive all these things should not apply to a turner who knows what he is doing am I right when I teach anyone to turn the drive and chuck jaws are the very first things I warn them about and loose clothing especially shirt cuffs

I am one of the younger generations (but not for much longer) however was taught the old style way, not in turning but woodwork in general. same rules apply, if there is a risk you avoid it.
