Hi Ed...what a bold piece and what a huge rim! At first glance I thought that the rim was way too wide, but having seen the overall width, it's big enough, I'm sure, for the rim to be that big as there's still plenty left for the bowl of the platter. We all too often look at proportions of plates and platters with them presented empty, but this platter, when full of fruit, or cheese, or whatever else you plan for it, is still going to show off a beautiful piece of timber. I really like it.

Well done, Ed.
I agree, it's a beautiful piece of timber and the design lends itself to being both functional and a showpiece at the same time.
Did the ripple present much of a problem to get a smooth cut as I haven't tried any but understood it was a step-up in challenge?

Hi Ed,
Well done, lovely platter, wish I could get some of this chestnut.
What finish did you apply? At this diameter it would need gallons of CA !!
Regards
Ken

Thanks all

Phil the timber cut well so no problems.

Ken the finish is 6 coats of Microcrystalline Wax over a coat of sanding sealer.

Ed, For the scale of the piece, you've an excellent form. Like it, well done.

Can never work out size when not in £ : p ...   ;D ..

What a gorgeous piece of timber. It must have come from well down the trunk to cause those fantastic ripples. And you've brought them out very well.

The overall shape works, I do like the small shallow bowl area and the large overspill area as the rim.

Well done with this piece.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?
