Christmas boxes with simple magnetic catches
« on: November 06, 2014, 09:25:32 AM »
This is posted mostly because I like the magnetic catches - made with simple ~one penny each 3mm dia * 3mm long magnets.  The boxes are made to hold sets of silver threepenny pieces, whose Christmas significance will be clear to older readers!  Of course these are all pre-1920, and thus sterling silver.

Will,

I like the idea and I can see other uses for it as well.

Thanks for posting such a good idea.

I use magnets for a few things but hadn't thought of them for boxes. Brilliant idea.

Thanks for the name of the magnet supplier. I have a commission for a small box and thought this sort of mechanism would be ideal, but was struggling to find magnets small enough.

Thanks

Very good, and into my file of info I am bound to want at some future date.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

You can buy packs of 100 rare earth magnets on Ebay for very cheap and they are strong little buggers too.

I use them to make magnetic pin bowls and pick up sticks which are quick and cheap to make and sell well.
