Mulberry
« on: October 20, 2014, 03:50:11 PM »

About this time last year some friends of ours asked Tony to make them some Keepsakes from a 400 year old Mulberry tree/bush
that had been blown down some time ago. They had the main part of the tree/bush planked and all that was left was some
Moth eaten bits. So Tony did the three bowl thingy and a couple of dishes last year.......A couple of months ago they asked for
2 vases and 2 boxes this is the best Tony could do as by now the wood was well past its sell by date. They are all done to there
  specifications
Comments as always welcome     Tony and di

Nice. I particularly like the three bowl natural edge. Very smart.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi T&D....when turning the triple bowl, did you mount a counterbalance for it, or did you just turn at a slow speed?

Les
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

T & D. I really like the flat bowl and tall piece. Where did you find the metal components? Are they home made or bought? Nice job!

     Thank You ....Graham ......David......Ed
     Your comments are always appreciated.

Hi Les  Thank you for your interest ......The 3 bowl thing was turned very slow...its also done with a slight
bow / curve following the shape of the branch. But the photo is not picking it up very well.

Hi  The box is hollowed out to prevent cracking....The inserts were bought over the net but not sure where they got them from.
The metal on the vase is pewter.. cast.. and turned by Tony......You can get Pewter ingots from Tiranti .co.uk

Hope this helps Di & Tony

or do what I do and melt down pewter tankards from boot sales and charity shops. Modern English pewter (post 1800 or so) has no lead content so is safe.

Love these ...as usual Di and Tony. Haven't seen any of your work that I don't like yet.

Thank You Pete that's very much appreciated.......Pewter is in short supply round here ;D ;D
We do as you know use a lot of it. Tony has a  woodturning Friend who is experimenting with
making his own with a higher percentage of silver.
     Thanks   Di and Tony

Tony/Di,

I think I've said before that's it's good to see you turn regular items as well as those wonderful sculptures you show us.

I'm a sucker for shape and the neck of the tall vase really calls to me, the wood (all of it) is wonderful as well.

A 400 yo Mulberry - lucky you.

Thank You  Bryan ......We like the vase as well......It is surprisingly lovely wood Both visually and to turn,
the  photo does not really do it justice, there`s just a few bits left. to play with.

I have been out of the country for a few weeks and upon my return decided to check out your work.  As expected beautifully executed.  Particularly love the tall piece.  :)
