Hello
« on: October 19, 2014, 10:46:32 AM »
Hi all,

I'm new to Turning although I had my lathe sat under my stairs for about a year driving me crazy because I didn't have the space to set it up.
I have a Draper WTL30 at the moment and have recently bought a Myford ML8 that needs some work before I will be using it.
So far I've made some Acorn Keyrings for my Kids, some various sized chess pieces and 2 small bowls and I have to say I have bitten by the bug.

Cheers Ryan

Hi Ryan. Welcome to the AWGB forum. I think you may find it is a pretty big bug and bites hard  :)

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi Ryan, and welcome. Might I suggest that you consider joining a woodturning club local to you. there are many throughout the country affiliated to this association, and they're a great source of knowledge and inspiration.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

I'm not sure where my nearest club is I don't have transport at the moment.
I live in Chepstow and I've searched online but haven't found any local.

Ah....you're a bit stuck-in-the-middle, there, Ryan. You have three AWGB clubs situated around you, at Ross, Cwmbran and Bristol, but nothing nearer, I'm afraid...unless there's a non-affiliated club, but I don't have a list of them. All the more reason to make the most of this forum.

Hi Rlewisrlou666 - Not sure on the name but welcome all the same. Crow Valley Woodturners are about 30mins drive for you in Cwmbran (this is my club) or Avon and Bristol or Burnham just over the water about the same distance. I have visited both  the Bristol Clubs and could recommend either, they all have websites so pay a visit. Although I no longer live there I still visit Chepstow 3 or 4 times a week as it's where I lived between leaving school and getting married. I would be interested to know where in Chepstow you are (send me a pm for privacy if you like)  --  Julian.

Hi Julian,
I'm up in Bulwark now but lived in Garden City for a while before that.

Thanks for the help Les but I'm a bit stuck at the moment till my knee is fixed and I can get back on a bike. I'll use the Forum as much as I can till then, there seems to be a wealth of knowledge on here.

Welcome to the Forum, Ryan.

Good to read where you're at with your turning so far (shall check the gallery) ... As for help, if you don't find the answer already on here, just ask, don't worry should it seem silly, never is if you don't know.. all have been there.

Hope the knee mends soon and back on the bike.

Cheers  David

I took a tumble last year and dislocated it and tore the medial and lateral meniscus cartilage.
It's ok some days but others it feels like my knee is out of place and clunks when i walk its still very painful a year later.

Ryan,

Welcome to the forum. With the cost of the bridge crossing I doubt you'll actually come over for a club night, but if you do drop into the Avon & Bristol and say hello, It's my club.
