I'm no timber expert but this was a bit of decaying branch from a tree I collected. The tree is Tree of Heaven the trunk when exposed has large very heavy pored rings as you describe. The guy where I collect it had it felled and told me that it was Tree of Heaven and I checked the timber markings online so I'm pretty sure that's what it is.
