Web site hosts
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:31:39 PM »
I an thinking about starting a little hobby website to chart my future turning exploits ( no, don't laugh )

I know many of you have your own sites are there any web hosts you would recommend or steer clear from

I have had quite a few sites 15 years or so ago with 1and1 but I don't think I would go back there.
Regards
Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi Graham

I have one with fasthost.co.uk that been with them for about 8 years and they have been very good but it's on a dedicated server and a small one with streamline that been with them for around the same amount of time and I've had no problem with that either.

Hi Graham  -  I am with Streamline.net as well, they are a very professional group and helpful too. If you are after a small site with just a few pages why not grab yourself a domain name with someone like domainmonster (other providers are available) and point it to weebly or Wix or some of the other free sites that are available before committing to buy as the main providers can be quite expensive. Hope this is of some use to you, at my other club we use UK2.net. an example of the packaged software is at www.st-kingsmark.co.uk (I had no part in the design of this by the way)  --   Julian

I have heard good reports about Fasthost. I use EUKHost who are very good. Not much in it price wise for their basic packages which you probably need. Both have web site building functions and an 24/7 on-line help facility where you communicate with real people.

With your own hosting packages, you can have a professional looking email address like graham@yourdomainname.co.uk.

Just so. One of the main reasons I am doing it  :)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. After several recommendations for friends and other turners I have settled on Compila.com.

I am now the proud owner of an empty space called YewTurning.co.uk  :)

Well done Graham, you will now need a little more of the design opportunities to make it look good.

I think that might be a week or two. my primary object was to get the email address but I seem to have killed everything trying to set it up :)

Hi Graham, I'd gone into this, well still am, I've just managed to retain my domain name with uk2net .. payment issue, I'd paid yet it had not been in their allotted time frame ..

My brother in law is in IT.. chatting with him (help with setup) he'd advised have a site, but you regularly need to keep it updated and always active/fresh and that's with pieces/items for sell, the reason in any site, until I'm able to get back to a regular basis it's on hold.. elsewise somebody had suggested a blog should it be more as a communications means and show that just made this or for correspondence... posher and more under your control than FB.. not that that can't work equally as well.

Cheers  David
