Charity Auction
« on: May 21, 2014, 11:46:22 PM »
We had an auction at my club this evening to raise money for charity.

I  bought a tool with removable tip and am trying to identify the manufacturer.

The handle has “The Home of Woodturning” on it but no company name.

The tip is  obviously reversible with  bead forming cutter end and  cove forming cutter end. The tip is  fixed to the shaft (which is  square section steel) with TWO button head socket screws. But both of these tiny screws would  need to be undone and the tip rotated through 180 degrees giving lots of opportunity to drop the screws or the tip into the shavings! Maybe that's why Tools like the Robert Sorby Multi-tip tool has a single screw that can be loosened rather than removed when rotating the tip.

It would  be good to know who manufactured this tool and if it's possible to obtain replacement tips.

Internet search NOT successful so I  guess it's no longer manufactured.

With best wishes and thanks.

Hi MC,

I believe "Home of Woodturning" was the name used by Craft Supplies UK on their own brand of budget tools. Craft Supplies UK ceased trading last year and their products were taken over by Turners Retreat, Haworth. It might be worth giving them a call.

Hope that helps,
Regards,

I've  written to Turners Retreat and will await their response.

A picture of us to look at might help. Some of us regularly make our own tools or bits for them, we might be able to offer suggestions.

Paul is spot on with his reply, it's/was the name used by Craft Supplies, most packaging carried the name as it was sold through other retailers as well, items I purchased came from Yandles and were so marked.

I  have tried to attach photographs to a reply but it doesn't want to post.

I  am now at a loss!

Any suggestions?

MC,

there is a size limit on pictures being posted.

Most modern cameras take images far in excess of the 3Mb limit, you'll need to reduce the size of the pictures first.

I'm  afraid that I  have no idea how to do that!

MC,

presuming you are using Windows above XP, open Paint and then open the photo you want to resize.

There should be an option to 'Resize'. Percentage should be selected as standard (if not select), ensure 'Maintain Aspect ratio' is checked and then enter a number below 100.

This will depend upon your original image size, so I can't help you there. However, if you select 50% and then 'Save As' and give it a new name (add Sm50 or somesuch, you can them hover over the saved file and see how big it is. Anything under 3Mb (3000kb) is good but I'd personally recommend under 1Mb (1000kb).

If the saved file is still too big, load the original file again and select a lower number and try again.

I'm  using an Apple Macintosh G4 AGP Graphics running OS 10.4.11. It was part of my retirement package from the University.

I've  looked at Preview, in which photographs open, and there's nothing in the “help” about reducing memory requirements of photographs.

I'm  having enough trouble with the turning; I  can't spare the time top learn about photographs on computer too!

With best wishes and thanks.

In apple mac speak it is,  preview - tools - resize and pick an image size.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

That's NOT a facility in Preview version 3.0.9, I'm  afraid.

But I've  found Photoshop Elements and used that, eventually, to create smaller versions.

I'm  trying again to attach them!

And we'll see what happens this time

With best wishes and thanks.

Ahh, sorry about that, I am on version 7 ( and it is adjust size rather than resize) but you have sorted it out and that is all that matters  :)

I can't say if there are replacement tips, but if you unscrew the one as fitted and hone the top on a diamond stone or other fine grain sharpening stone, you'll probably find it works as well as it did when it was new.

What I can't say (having never used one) is how well it worked in the first place.

Don't touch the thin edges at all.
