Oak burr pots
« on: April 20, 2014, 08:11:31 PM »
I've been working with a batch of oak burr. It's small in section and has bags of character, so I've had to learn a lot about working with stuff like this and have had a few disasters along the way. However, a set of 4 different pots has come out of it, one of which is going to South Carolina as a part of the Spring swap' programme of Woodturners Unlimited. I do hope that the recipient likes it!

All the pots are out of 5.5" diameter blocks and are in the region of 4.5" to 5" high, and they're finished with Danish oil and then buffed.

C&C always welcome....Les

Siwd mae Les
Lovely burrs. Nice simple forms nicely turned and finished, but if I had to choose one out of the four it would be the one without a foot,

Lovely use of a lovely wood Les. Keeping it simple like this really lets the wood do the talking. I.m sure they will love it in Carolina.

Hi Les

Great burrs and great turning, I also prefer the one without the foot out of the four of them but that's just my personal taste.

Les,

Good to see you are still finding lovely wood in that pile you bought some time ago.

Four attractive little pots, I'm with the consensus here and the second pot is attractive, but the 4th pot runs it a very close second, they both have a pleasing sweep in the curve of their shape.

A nice selection of pots Les minimalistic in there form contrasting well with the burr oaks
rustic appeal. Very well presented with a lovely finish.
we like 2 and 4 as well

Good question....my pyrography skills are not sufficiently refined to be able to burn all that info on such a small foot, and in timber that's horrible to burn on, anyway. So, when pyrography isn't up to it, I use an archivist's pen. These could be purpose made for us. They are available in extremely fine points, they're indelible and they are generally darned good quality. Mine cost a little over £3.00 and should last for a very long time.
