Inspired by the new severn crossing
« on: April 15, 2014, 04:04:58 PM »
Hi All,
something a little different from what I normally show here. This piece is made from Burr Oak and Indian Ebony, with gold (colour) wire and gold (coloured) leaf. It stands about 9" tall and 6" across. It depicts the (stylised) "gateway" on the bridge with the wire supports, although it doesn't come across in the picture the top of the burr is dusted with gold (coloured) powder which is the sparkle on the river in sunlight and the grain of the top both polished and unpolished depicts the ripples in the water.
I would appreciate all comments + or - .

You've definitely caught the 'arty' bug John and it is obviously well established. I love the idea and the use of different materials in this. In fact the only thing I don't like is that you thought of it and not me LOL. Needless to say the workmanship is spot on as to be expected as well.

Like the concept John Its very well Presented and the gold colour contrasts well

with the ebony. A very nice sculptural piece. It has a very good visual impact.

Thanks Guys,
yes it was fun to make and it has also given me an idea for another one based on the same subject so watch this space. Pete if you had seen the bridge on the day I had seen it and in the light that was there you would have made it aswell. :)

Hi John,

A really well executed project. Superb finish, love the gold leaf. To create such a beautiful piece you must have been looking across at Wales ;D

Rod, I have to say that I was in Wales on the way to England (sorry to disappoint) but it is only from that beautiful country that you see the full sweep and curve of the bridge.

John, I'm most impressed, you've done well, it conveys the very element well of the bridge, the same wouldn't work for the old crossing.

To really appreciate this piece you need to have made the crossing and then like you've said, it's once only that moment, conditions were just right.

I'd traveled to work on the same road every morning for years, the light just that once cast on the wooded valley showed multi shades of greens to the conifers plantation, never seen again, well by me, it could still just happen.

David thanks for your comments. You are right of course about the old crossing, it just wouldn't work the same way. There is a point on the A46 when you can get a fleeting glimpse of both crossings at the same time but the eye is always drawn to the new one.
Ed the gold worked very well.

John

good to meet up at the show, albeit only for a few minutes.

Really like this piece and am looking forward to more from this series.  It is amazing what we can find around us to be inspired by with this being a fine example. You will have to get yourself a blue and white striped smock.  :)

Sorry for the late replies, trouble with BT.
Mark  thanks for the comments, working on the next one at the moment. Good to see you too at Yandles, trouble is I always end up being way laid and never got round to coming back to chat. :-[

As for inspiration, I think I have this site (or it's members)to thank for showing me "how to think"
