Metallic Gold Rimmed Ash Platter
« on: April 13, 2014, 06:01:49 PM »
12" diameter Ash platter. Rim textured using dremmel and dental burr, ebonised with Chestnut spray then Jo Sonja metallic gold applied to raised areas on rim.
Disappointed no representative of  AWGB at Yandles yesterday :(, nice to meet Pete(Bodrighywood) and to chat with Mark Sanger and George. :)
C & C welcome again

Rod,

the rim work is wonderful, really well done and effective.

Now please don't think I'm being overly critical but I have a problem with the knot. I don't mind knots but that one looks dead (it's black) and hence likely to become loose. So have you given it a good soaking with CA glue to retain it?

Something else is to make it more of a feature, do you have gilt cream, you could fill the cracks in it, lightening it slightly into the process but making it a gilded knot and more attractive - just my thinking.

Hi BHT
I did see Andy, what I meant was there was no AWGB stall so I could buy some stickers and badges.

Rod, it's a night for platters, given Bryan's spun work. The texture and color are outstanding and complements the Ash an it's size, the knot is only natural, it's wood, it happens, something you couldn't create.

Roderick  You must have spent a long time on the texturing and its paid off.
The gold colouring on the high spots brings it all together.

Thanks again all for the positive comments.

dr4g0nfly........ The knot............your right, the knot was dead with a lot of loose splinters and very PALE . I scraped away the "dead" bits,a drop of superglue, then applied about six "coats" of danish oil by brush, a good soaking, this has darkened the knot and hopefully prevent it drying out again for a long while. I can see where youre coming from with the gilt cream, but if you can enlarge the image you can see the knot is about 12mm deep. I'll bear it in mind for the next shallow knot!
