There is a wood fairy
« on: March 27, 2014, 04:31:24 PM »
Within the last fortnight I have been given 4 laburnum logs, 18 - 12" diameter by my tame tree surgeon
a lime board, 48x12x4" by someone at a market who has given up carving
and today a friend passed over 50 burrs from small to large in elm, oak, chestnut which he no longer wants.
The laburnum is green but the burrs and lime are dry as a bone.

If you want one of the laburnum discs John I'll bring one along to next club night for you. I need to treat the burrs first as some have work which is why  have left them outside the workshop.

It doesn't happen that often believe me. My friend has got a Wadkin RS and is only interested in doing very large green turning so the burrs were lying on a shelf. I have to go through them and sort out the ones with worm and treat them where needed before putting them in my workshop. The lime was someone who just walked up to me at a market and asked if it was any use to me as he couldn't carve anymore due to a wrist injury and he wanted it out of the way.

To get a wood fairy

1) Start a wood turning club
2) Get a club website
3) Then have your name and email address on the site
4) Wait and people will offer you wood
5) Thank the donor nicely and point out that it will be better for a tree surgeon to cut the tree down

I think some of your dust has just rubbed off on me, I was talking to one of my customers yesterday who purchased some chainsaw safety wear so I asked what he was up to, he runs a medieval re-enactment group and they have the use of two woods on a old estate, which they have to manage and they are just chainsawing and burning the tree's that have gone over in the winds!!!

Not anymore - when I told him what I was now doing he said come and help yourself, I can't wait to go and see what's there ;) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Hi Pete
I have a wadkin rs and I think your friends lathe will be a wadkin ru.
As you are receiving gifts, a couple of pieces of yew if you want them.

Could be right Ken, I think it is/was a pattern makers lathe form what Mark says. I am happy to swap a couple of the burrs for the yew if you like? One of us pop over or next club night, whichever suits best?
