damaged finger and dig in
« on: March 19, 2014, 10:37:08 AM »
I just thought I`d put a pic of the dig in and my pinky finger after five days of healing from the altercation with the skew chisel,I changed the dressing on finger last night and thought I`d show what happens if your unlucky enough to get bitten by the skew,I must say this is the first time I`ve been damaged by a skew, had a few dig in`s over the years like we all have,if we`re honest, anyway, heres the pics,I put a 12" rule by the dig in to show the scale, cheers,Eric.

I'm with John, you don't hold your tools with your pinkies.

Do you know where to find sympathy in the Army dictionary?

thats where I`m going wrong,I hold my turning tools with all my fingers and both thumbs when using bigger turning tools, small turning tools are better, you can just use mind control to make them hover on the toolrest and exert mind control to do the turning ::) ::) ::)

Col,John,Derek,dr4g0nfly, I know exactly how this happened,I posted the pic to show people especially inexperienced turners what can happen if you have a moments lapse of concentration and the long point of the skew catches on the wood and then proceeds to dig in,in what can be a spectacular manner at times and can result in the point of the skew slicing through one`s finger/thumb/palm down to the bone(in this case) or if your lucky,as we are mostly, you just get a sound like a gunshot and a great big tear in the wood being turned, the skew possibly being thrown across the workshop (mind your head, and make sure your wearing a facemask) at great speed (due to it not being held properly),or your arm just being thrown in the air (tool still in hand) >:( >:( >:(

Eric,

please don't take my last remark in this thread as anything other than a frendly jib at your misfortune.

If it read as anything else, it was not meant that way and I offer my apologies.
