Yet another rotten apple!!!!
« on: March 05, 2014, 09:15:46 PM »
This is a hollow form from a piece of worm eaten and rotten apple.Following sanding of it, the soft parts had become very uneven and did not feel right or look right. So I grit blasted it, and the result is as shown. The neck is Yew and is not right, and will be changed for a black one at some time. Finish is Acrylic satin laquer and size is 7 1/2" x 5". As usual fell free to lambast.

Now I think this looks as good as any of the Aussie Burrs Hughie shows us. The worm and other damage gives it the open crack appearance of some of his burrs.

I also like the lid, my first impression was organic, like the thick stem of a pumpkin.

Nice to see someone else is thrifty with their wood LOL. I would agree about the neck personally, too close in colour for my taste. Black would look good I reckon.

Love it.....what a great way to use up scrap pieces. I'd love to know more about the sand-blasting process. What capacity of compressor do you need? I notice that guns are readily available through sites like ebay, and are not expensive, but it seems that a sizeable compressor is needed to drive them.

It's great to see what can be used to turn, to me the pot look's a little to battered with the lid, but it's appearance will change completely once you have change the top.

Very brave to use the sandblaster, if that was me using it I'd have nothing left.  :D

Hi Roger,
I love this piece I enjoy working with difficult timbers, I don't usually get such a good result as this!
Not sure about the yew perhaps a black wood would be better?

Have a look at Pascal Oudets work Les. He sandblasts oak a lot. Amazing the effect he gets.

Thanks for the comments chaps. The compressor I used, not mine might I add, delivers 7cfm and was used at a pressure of 80psi. The bigger the storage tank the better. I used kiln dry sand, the type you use for paving. Anything bigger would have destroyed the piece.

I like the color of the wood, I have found the same in a few pieces before, it's surprising what a little sandblast will do, very good result.
With the present top, I like the form and as it is, the sap wood ring separates the 2 grains types. Will be nice to see, when you us a solid color.
