Brown oak trinket box
« on: October 30, 2013, 07:36:24 PM »
I bought a few 6ft lengths of brown oak in 4"x4" section, so was wanting to make a practice piece, just to get a feel for the timber and how it works. The design of this isn't mine, it comes from a turner called Kim Gowney, from Pembrokeshire, who, in turn, has based them on the work of George Watkins - I guess that nothing is new!

Mine is scaled up quite a bit...Kim's looks to be just a couple of inches high, but mine is 6" high x 4" diameter (15cm x 10cm)

C&C always welcome!

Les, you've boxed clever there, a design on a design ... nice form and piece of Brown Oak, it's not that bad to work and you've an excellent finish, is it oil with wax over .. really nice how the grain stands out.

Thank you for sharing, well done.

Les,

I can't fault the work but I'm having a little difficulty with the curves, they seem a little 'off' or 'not quite right' in my eyes. It's probably the scale of the piece, you say it's from 4" x 4" timber, so quite a large trinket box to say the least.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Hi Dewi...it's wax on sanding sealer...I'll buff it in a day or two

Bryan...fair point; it is big!

Microcrystalline as it's a box, Les. Should look nice once buffed.
