This piece was inspired by NZ turner Gordon Pembridge and a request from my wife. It Is 7 1/2"high x 5"dia and turned from sychamore, pierced, carved, pyrographed and coloured. It depicts two kingfishers, one having just caught a fish and the other ready to dive. Comments and critiques welcome.

An immense labour of love with a terrific outcome. We see lots of attempts at things like this, and some are (to be quite honest) rather amateurish, but this one shows the way to go for others to follow. It's not a branch of woodturning that I'd choose to go down, but that doesn't stop me appreciating both the amount and the quality of the work.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Wow Gwilym, you've captured the form down to minute detail, these could almost fly,as for the leaves and branches, you've excelled yourself with this piece.

Thank you for sharing, if I check in on Wow, you're likely to have the Cover .. most go check.

Cheers  David

Thanks all for your comments. I don't know about it being a labour of love Les, I cursed the wife quite a bit whilst doing it but I'm pleased with it now it's done.

If it wasn't for Jim Ellsworth, an El Toro, the Cover should be your's..

Gwilym,

you've certainly out-done yourself this time, it'll be a hard one to follow up.

Wow what a stunning piece of work. You say at a request from your Good Lady but don't give her response, I trust her love of this piece is worth the effort it took.

Hi Gwilym, This is a superb piece of work, the many hours it must have taken to accomplish such a masterpiece but I have to ask were you and are you an accomplished artist first and then developed woodturning skills as a new venture. A Woodturner's wife who is an artist

Hi Wellturnedout, I wasn't an accomplished artist. My hobby was ceramics until my wife who loved wood persuaded me to take up woodturning. My work is a result of trying to duplicate some of my ceramic pieces.

Hi Gwilym,

Yet another masterpiece I've been lucky to see in the flesh!

See you Wednesday
