small platter of unknown local tree
« on: September 07, 2013, 07:29:13 AM »
Thought I might try my hand at a platter, not sure of the timber. It was cut down at a local park by the council some sort of disease and in danger of falling over all I know its a native.

25cm oiled with several coats of BLO then hand rubbed with soft rag

Hughie,

Platter, with all that carving, not sure I'd like to serve anything on it, or at least have to clean it afterwards!

Beautiful work, did you do the carving by hand ?

If you manage to discover what it it, pop back and let us know please.

I think it is London Plane (Lacewood) it's a tree that is widely used in parks, and of cause the streets of London.... (It tolerates pollution well)
...Dave.

Dave,

I'm not saying it's impossible that it's London Plane, but Hughie joins us from Australia.

Bryan.

The grain does look like London Plane but it is the wrong colour...assuming that is the natural colour.

Nice looking work though whatever it is. . Very crisp carving and attractive design./ Almost celtic.

It is very similar to London Plane they do grow here and in NZ. Its actually a Banksia, now which one I have no idea as it cut down by the council and a friend pass it on to me over a year ago.

Its mainly a decorative thing, the back has a decent sized recess to allow it to be hung. The actual design is based on the Maori Koru which is from their interpretation of the Silver Fern and with it you need to keep all the edges crisp to get the greatest effect.

Hi again, Hughie.....it always amazes me that despite being at opposite points on the globe, Celtic art has so many close connections with Maori art. I guess that with ancient cultures there were very few influences for people to draw their inspiration, so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised that diverse cultures ended up producing similar work. Your scroll-design reminds me of the work being produced by an American ceramicist by the name of Lisa Gidlow Moriarty -  http://www.linkedin.com/in/lisagidlowmoriarty  -  who celebrates the nature of interwoven art forms world-wide.
It's giving me loads of ideas!

Hughie, the picture, for sure doesn't do the piece justice, a beaut for details and finish, well done.

Are, your seeing a fine example of my superb photographic skills .....  :)   not.

But thanks for all the good comments. Platters are not something I do very many of and it seems you guys do a lot of them over your way. So its very pleasing to get all this positive feed back from the land of platter spinners.  ;D
