Matched Spalted Beech Goblets
« on: July 05, 2013, 09:44:50 PM »
Hi folks, been a while since I popped anything up to the forum.

So here are a matched pair of Spalted Beech Goblets, each has two captive rings (turned with a skew). They stand 280mm (11") high and 65mm (2 5/8") across the widest part of the cups.

C&C welcomed and thanks for looking,

Bryan

Hi Bryan...I think they're great! I'm not as well versed in the rules and conventions of design as you are, but they clearly are right as they clearly look right! One of these days I'll master the skew (I hope) and until then I wouldn't even attempt something as fine as this.

Thanks for posting the pics; loved looking at them.

Cheers...Les

They look good to me. Nice to see goblets with some design to them as so many are made out of proportion but you got these right. Are they coated or just for decoration?

Thanks guy's

Les,

I can do thinner stems, but not under such large cups. Practice more and remember the fibres in the wood are stronger than you'd think. Here's a practice for you. Put a 1" square by 8" (approx dims) between centres and using a skew, plane it down until it breaks, honest you'll be amazed how far you can go. You'll almost be down to a toothpick before it goes.

Woody,

I always appreciate your input. I made a set of golden ratio callipers a while back and forced myself to stick to what they said were the right proportions - looks like it worked.

Pete,

Hmmm? I did coat the inside (first time I've ever done it) because the bowls are only around 2mm thick. But I'm not 100% happy with it, so more experimentation. The outside is just done on a buffing system ending in carnubra wax.

Hi Bryan, they're stunning and nice to see, your usual best .. like the small rings and bead which stops them droping to the base, which is seen all too often with captive ring goblets.

Cheers and well done.
