Textured, Coloured Platter
« on: April 27, 2013, 07:24:48 PM »
Having a play with the Mini Arbortech I bought at Yandles.

Today's efforts include this Textured, Coloured Platter. Beech 295mm dia by 300mm deep. 2 passes at 300 rpm gave me this texture.

Coloured in the manor of George using Spirit Stains. I only used 3 (Black Red & Yellow) so was amazed to see the purple appear in the middle.

Photographed in natural light to try and get the colours to show properly - which looks to have failed as I can't see the purple as clearly in the picture in my screen as I can otherwise.

C & C as always, and thanks for looking.

Edit - Added a second picture, the colours show a little better in this one.

Peacock .. not Mr .. the effect as much as the colors, not to call it Rainbow as so few, looks fine Bryan, could the bowl have been a bit bigger.

And you should have been cuting the grass or is it still to wet ..

Nice effect and colours. I assume you meant to say the depth was 30mm ont 300mm as that would make it a bowl!!! How did you get on with the Arbotech mini? Was it easy to use? Malcolm.

Very nice platter and unique!  I have the arbotech but I don't know off hand if it's the mini or not. But you have inspired to pull it out again.

Robert

I like the texturing and the colouring, looks really good but wonder if it would look a bit more dramatic if the band on the outer and inner parts of the rim were a little wider? As is it is so dramatic for my taste more contrast of the plain, natural wood would highlight it and give it more appeal.

David,

isn't that Miss Peacock, in the ballroom with (oh never mind, wrong forum!).
A bigger centre bowl portion, probably yes, but give me a break, first time I've sprayed this stain stuff, I'd have lost all the purple I was so pleased to see. But you're right, the rule of thirds was forgotten by your's truly (Ooop's) :'(
The Grass was dry, the edges need strimming but it's otherwise cut (honest).

Malcolm,

yes, 30mm, I'd just washed my hands, could not do a thing with them ;D
The Arbortech is easy to use, cut's hacks and grinds whatever it touches, controlling it, that takes a little practice. For this one I set up the toolrest so I could slid along it to ensure I had a constantly maintained distance from the timbers surface.

Robert,

thank you.
The Arbortech looks like an angle grinder with a 4½" cutter wheel, the Mini is slightly smaller in body size but has a extension sticking out of the front with a 2" cutter wheel. I'm still learning. I'd suggest not trying to work it too hard too early in using it. Get to understand how it wants to 'run' over the wood on scrap before attacking anything nice.

Andy,

thank you,

John,

thank you but nope, George is the master of these, I'm merely trying out some of what I learnt with him last year now I have the machinery. Truthfully I did not get the effect I was trying to achieve - despite being very pleased with what I created.

Pete,

Same comments as above, first one and learning as I go, but think you have a good point there and will take it onboard for the future.

I really like this, the colours are really bold, but they work well together.
I was wondering whether or not the texturing causes the colours to darken in much the same was as other wood stains appear darker on textured surfaces!
p.s., Bryan....put the gouge away and get the mower out

The texturing, staining and workmanship has added a new dimension to a wood that would  otherwise lack visual interest.   I like the way the carefully turned / polished centre  contrasts with your radial texturing.
Is the arbortech safe to use with school children, it is a tool I have never used?

Haggy,
I don't think the Arbortech is suitable for use by school children, it has a sharp wheel spinning at high speed with the cutting portion UN-guardable(?) Next to the router this is possibly one of the most dangerous hand tools to use, there could also be a strength problem aswell as they can be difficult to control.
Sorry to hi-jack your thread Bryan.

First time I used one I was too gentle and the thing nearly got ripped out of my hands. It definitely takes a strong grip and careful use. Not sure how the mini one measures up but if it is the same sort of blade I would be loathe to let any kids near it.

Haggy,

I'd agree with John (BHT) definitely not. Think 2" diameter wheel with chainsaw like teeth spinning in excess of 10,000 rpm.

Or as a friend puts it,

Things with sharp teeth eat meat,
Woodwork Tools have sharp teeth,
Humans are made of Meat!

However, have you looked at George's website & Blog, he makes these far better than I do and his use of  colour and textures are amazing. That would be something to show the school kids to inspire them.

George,

I'd be honoured, see you Tuesday.
