What to do with scraps?
« on: April 27, 2013, 06:00:19 PM »
I guess I am like most turners and am always accumulating odds and ends of wood which I clear out every now and then. This was the result of me going through a 'why waste it' phase. The basin is from an old oak beam that has been turned on the inside but left as is on the outside then ebonised (vinegar etc), the small bowl is an offcut of beech and the jug is a small piece of sycamore. The spout is a small length of bamboo cut in half. The rushes are from oddments of wood drilled through and mounted on barbeque sticks ( I know I should have turned them as well LOL) Bottom basin is roughly 3" diameter inside. The stones are polished pebbles of various types. Well it makes a change from goblets LOL

hello Pete, I turned some Bulrushes once and used the Bamboo skewers they looked fine in a a small weed pot until one day I bent down near to the and one stuck in my forehead I was glad it wasn't my eye so be careful they are very sharp.I do however like this piece.

An turning of pure genius.

Well done Pete and thanks for putting this up. I'm sure it will inspire us all to think harder of what to do with 'scraps'.

Pete, this is one stunning piece(s) all the little elements gel nicely into the whole piece, brilliantly done.

Thank you for sharing.

Thank you.Now for the hard part, getting some decent photos that show it off properly. That and promoting re so much harder than the actual turning.

Great one Pete.

Nice piece indeed and a great way to use up those odds and sods.

One of the galleries I sell in has a chap that makes bull rushes etc full size as well as other similar dry flower type thingies, they are great for displays and of course sell well as the ladies like them.

This is a great piece. I can see you doing the same with a Zen style dry garden as a 'Executive Toy'. I have been meaning to make some for years now, never got round to it, like most stuff I have rattling around in my head.

Thank you John and Mark.
I could see it as a challenge evening where people bring along scraps of wood and bits they can't see any use for and seeing what can be made from?
I have a couple of ideas floating around as well Mark, one involving some sort of ikebana container and sand ......

Ikebana, that would be interesting to see, not something I have dabbled in.

I have thought about Air Plants for some sculptural pieces, but again it is in the mix somewhere.  :)

Back to the simplicity theme of oriental art, well, simple in appearance but hard to achieve without disruption.
