Bad wood made good?
« on: August 23, 2012, 05:49:23 PM »
This was one of those challenges. Would I get a bowl or lots of flying bits of wood? It is spalted (AKA rotten) unknown wood and is on a piece of oak that was rescued from a fire, wire brushed and buffed. It stands 20" high overall and the bowl is11" diameter.

Thick, Chunky & Rustic also spring to mind as does 'It looks amazing'.

That is a very good result, it's a case of luck in having the two pieces which come together in an excellent form, great piece.

Like it too.             David

PS ....  Could it be Beech, looks like the results of some that I had.

the growth rings are FAR to wide for beech...if the bowl is 11" inch the rings look to be half inch seasonal growth...I'd go for a pine, eucalypt type tree. Nice piece.

Thanks for the replies. Appreciated. Not everyone likes pieces as rustic as this though I love using wood that others reject. I am pretty sure it isn't beech and not pine either, where it isn't rotten it's too hard for pine. I have some more of it as well as some donated lumps of OK so may get a few more off the wall things done in between commissions.
