Silky Oak, hollowed and carved
« on: July 27, 2012, 01:27:09 AM »
Not sure if this is a flat vessel of hollow platter  :D

Anyway its a piece of nicely figured Silky Oak 12x3" finished with DO, carved with involute curves and the inside is stained with a Mahogany Stain in epoxy resin.

Hi Hughie,  I do like the way you've kept the crispness of the carving and a stunning design.

Just one question, what are you expecting to go inside of it if you've used an epoxy resin, or is it filling something we can't see?
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Its more of a decor piece I suspect but you could fill it with Pot pourri. The idea of the epoxy was to give it a mirror finish and Mahogany colour to give depth. A maelstrom effect, a vortex,  powerful and dark.

I figured the only way it would work was to keep the line very sharp to define vortexs, in the end it took a lot more effort that I expected.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys.

Hi Hughie, lovely piece and a nice piece of timber. The last time I turned Silky Oak I had severe asthma for six months.  Wore a mask for the turning but not when bandsawing.

Good one - like the contrast between the inner and the caved edge  :)
