Weight of Axminster Evolution 4 jaw chuck

Hi, I'm new to turning but have been a carpenter for over 40 years. I recently purchased an Axminster Evolution 4 jaw chuck package for my 50-year-old 12" lathe and I'm concerned about its weight and its effect on the bushings etc. on my lathe. I have a 1 1/2 horse motor and the lathe is cast iron and in excellent shape otherwise, I'm just worried about attaching such a heavy chuck to the 1" spindle head. Axminster's customer support is not making me feel confident.

Has anyone else had experience with using the heavy stainless steel chucks on an older lathe?

Should not be a problem they are a well balanced chuck

Well balanced chuck any weight is right up against the headstock and is much less than the potential weight you could hold in it.

Stainless steel is generally heavier than many other steels so if you’re worried about weight a similar size chuck from the likes of Record Power should be lighter? You could also get a smaller chuck like the RP SC3 or the Axminster SK88 which isn’t stainless steel like the SK100 and SK114.

The difference in density between steel and stainless steel is absolutely negligible in this situation. The axminster chuck is quality manufacturing and is perfectly balanced. When you consider the weight of the blank it can hold the weight of the chuck becomes less of an issue

I like my Axminster SK100 but we have an Axminster SK114 at the club and it vibrates a lot. The other chucks used on the same lathe are fine so the SK114 is going back to Axminster at some point to see what’s wrong with it.
I had runout issues with an RP SC4 so there are duds out there.

An out of balance SK114 must surely be a manufacturing problem and should be returned for service. I have four SK 114 chucks which are manufactured superbly and run perfectly concentric and balanced. I suppose a set of poorly manufactured jaws could also be a problem.
