spiral segmentation
« on: October 14, 2024, 09:18:17 AM »
Hello friends,

I'm working on a piece that I've never seen anywhere. It's a tube (like an empty glass inside) made by segmenting two pieces of wood. I'm recording the whole process to upload it to my YouTube channel.

Although I'm not completely sure that I can do it yet, I explained to ChatGPT the technique I'm going to use, and his response was that, as I proposed, it is possible to create it. Personally, I've never seen it before (which doesn't mean it doesn't exist).

Currently, I'm in the first phase of segmentation, and until I see the final result, I can't be 100% sure that a perfect spiral will be achieved. In any case, in a few days I'll know the result and I'll share it with you.

If anyone has any idea how I'm going to create it, or thinks it's not possible, I'll listen to advice.

Greetings

The two photos showing ant I think you want to do. The first require you to build your shape using the conventional segmenting brick layer method and then removing unwanted segments to form the spiral design. The second involves turning a tube and then cutting the spirals , then cutting the spiral ends away and reassembling. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the photos. They are separate pieces made using the spiral technique. They are very pretty. I am referring to creating a joined spiral. I am going to post a photo with an example of a strip of wood, simulating what I want to do. It is a glued spiral.

Go to the reply box and underneath is an attachments option. Click on that and a box will appear giving choices of photo library or take photo. Select what you want and then post

This photograph is a simulation of the piece I explain, but it will be much larger.

You can do that by cutting segments and forming the spiral that way. Or, and it needs a lot of accuracy cutting two spirals in different woods and interweaving one into the other, or cut a spiral in one wood and use fusing to fill the void between. That could be done in a mould with liquid resin or by using an epoxy putty like Milliput.

Thank you very much for the answer, I'm working on it, I'm doing it as explained, only with wood.
