Trouble with inherited lathe chuck!
« on: October 01, 2024, 11:24:02 AM »
Hello everyone!
I've inherited an old Record Power Model No.2 from a family member, it's a hefty old girl for a first timer! But I've always admired the work that was produced on her and am glad it has been left to me to carry on.

It had been left for a little while so have cleared out the sawdust and cleaned up the outside, but there is an old workpiece still in the chuck jaws, I cannot seem to find the correct keys, tommy pins or c spanners in order to remove this.

Eventually I would probably remove this chuck and install a better modern version, but I also cannot remove the chuck!

Any help appreciated, I'm itching to get stuck in!

You will need to obtain / make some tommy bars make them quite long, Jamb the tommy bar in the back hole against the lathe bed or if you must the centre of the toolrest. and use the other in the front hole (knurled section) then it is just force, maybe a few taps, maybe some WD40 maybe some heat... (do the least necessary).

To remove it from the spindle then open the belt cover, find a way to lock the spindle (sorry I can't remember that model) then back hole tommy bar and unscrew it.

Welcome to woodturning.
TT, AKA Pete, but that name is taken :-)

Hi Twisted Trees, that's great thanks for your help.

On assembly it wasn't obvious but another glance under the belt cover I spotted the flat edges milled onto the shaft to get a spanner on to undo the chuck, one big pull and off it came!
Everything is running smooth but looks as if the drive belt has seen better days, better get a spare in just in case.

One problem down, at least now I can get a replacement on and make a start. Looking forward to using the masses of advice through this forum!

Thanks again,
Gary

If you have any difficulty sourcing a spare belt have a look at "simply bearings" website.  Under  the power transmission category they have a huge range of drive belts and your task is easier than many because you have an original to measure. Lathe manufacturers use off the shelf products so it might be easier to find the right size than a specific named lathe spare.

I'm sure there are many other sources, I have used simply bearimgs for a small order and it was fine.
