Nova chuck

Hi All

i have a Tyme Avon that i inherited a few years back which came with a nova chuck with tommy bars, and a 25x 2 thread. There is a insert on the chuck, it is a little akward offering up the wood but i haven't known any different, i also have a Clarke lathe with a 1 3/4 x 16 tpi that i want to get a chuck for . I am thinking of a G3 nova insert type  then getting a insert for  the 16 tpi so i can change them about.
It sounds a quite simple solution to me. The Nova and the newer ones are compatible i think. Any opinions or advice welcome. Also where is the best place to get a reasonably priced G3, or will i have to bite the bullet and get a new one.

Personally I think you are going the right way using inserts. You could buy a 3/4" x 16 threaded chuck, but if you change your lathe in the future, you would need to buy a whole new chuck.
As for where to buy a G3, prices are all much of a muchness, if you can buy in person, you will save postage but otherwise you are stuck paying the same everywhere.

Axminster, have just introduced a range of chucks with interchangeable bakplates. Have a look at the Discovery range of chucks.

Having had a RP SC3 with a threaded insert that never ran true, I’ve avoided them. All my chucks are direct threaded. As John says though, Axminster tools now make several chucks with interchangeable back plates. I’m sure these are likely to be much more accurate.
There is also the Versachuck which also has interchangeable back plates.

Not certain if it is achievable but if I had 2 lathes with old style spindle sizes I would be looking for an engineer that could make me a sleeve to "convert" the spindle to an M33 with grub screws to secure it, good chucks are expensive may as well buy them for forever use.

I agree. I’ve often seen folks trying to buy chucks for obscure lathe spindles. If I had an old lathe that was worth keeping I’d certainly look into the option of having the spindle replaced with one with an M33 thread. I suspect though that it would be quite expensive?

If I have read your post correctly you already have a Nova chuck which is fitted with a 25X2 insert. It may have the code IWNS or just W stamped on it.
You also say you have a Clarke lathe with a " 1 3/4 x 16 tpi" headstock spindle. I suspect it is not 1 3/4" but just 3/4" as that was a very common standard, used by many manufacturers. If that is the case all you need to use your existing chuck on the Clarke lathe is a 3/4" x 16 insert (I9NS). If you want one, I have one for sale for £15.
