Ash, strange mottled area
« on: February 21, 2024, 12:55:41 PM »
This was a small spindle blank, c 40x40mm, all looked normal when I cut it from a larger piece on the bandsaw but when I got into it there was an area of white 'blobs', a bit softer than the surrounding area.  The rest is fine.

This one is for the bin, but I was wondering what it was - if the rest of the ash I bought at the same time is like it I will be grumpy.

Any thoughts?

I've seen markings akin to that in Apple caused by spalting

I would take another 3mm off, if it is fungal based you may get through it

Try wood hardener before you bin it.

Thanks all, happy to use it for kindling (it's not worth messing with as it is such a small piece, I know I could find ways but its nothing special).  I was just wondering what was the cause as I've not seen that kind of patterning before.
