I would have thought lacquer wasn't compatible over an oil finish. Terry's suggestion of wax would have been safer but I guess time will tell.

I had the wax tin ready to go, and a newly cleaned soft brush as per Terry's advice but then I thought, why not try some lacquer and if it reacts in some way, just rub it down again.
So, I gave it a go and to date it's been fine. Longer term, who knows? I certainly don't!

3 coats of oil are never enough.

I would have thought lacquer wasn't compatible over an oil finish.

I saw a Jimmy Clewes video a few years back that proved that isn’t true. I had to try it myself and although it’s only a tool handle the finish has remained intact despite a fair bit of use. Probably not a technique I’d rely on for large surfaces though.

@BHT I was intending to go to 5 or more coats of oil but it was going a horrible colour and messy, hence my stopping at 3 coats.
It has now got 3 coats of oil and 4 coats of lacquer!

@Bill21  Jimmy Clewes is good enough to break the rules knowingly, but I was simply lucky. Interesting to know that he's done it though, I'll have to see if I can find the video.

Brilliant, thank you. I found it entertaining and informative, to say nothing of slightly bonkers!
Who would try that in a spotless white shirt??
