Seemingly impossible spindle adapter
« on: July 28, 2022, 03:41:23 PM »
Hi guys, new member here  and new to wood turning too.
I've just this week collected a new to me Arundel K series lathe which has come with all sorts of accessories including 3 chucks which unfortunately are nothing like the 24x3 spindle size of the lathe. After an awful lot of searching and research I've found they all are 3/4x16 threaded.
I've searched all over and cannot find an adaptor to solve this problem, I've emailed various people and haven't had a single reply, am I looking in the wrong place or is this just not a thing? Hoping someone can help!

Charnwood have a lot https://charnwood.net/?s=thread+adaptor are you sure of the size at 24mm x 3TPI? You may have to have an adapter specially machined.

According to the Lathes.co.uk site it’s perhaps more likely to be M24 x 2.5?

Good luck with your quest. Let us know how you get on, it may help others.

Edit: When these problems crop up I often wonder if a bigger spindle (perhaps from another manufacturer) with a more common thread could be re machined to give these old lathes a new lease of life without resorting to adapters? Bearing sizes may be a limiting factor though.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
I got the spindle sizing from here it's an Arundel K series

I've got the manual but it doesn't have any specifications in it. Where would I get something machined? There's a couple of faceplates with it that fit and ford oil filter connectors are the thread I need for the chucks it might be a bit heath Robinson but can you see any problems with welding one to the other? As long as it's square!

Not a solution unless the chucks you have are Nova, or at least compatible with it. but it is a starting point.... perhaps you need to sell the chucks and buy a new one that fits.
TT, AKA Pete, but that name is taken :-)

Adapters aren’t an ideal solution as you can get a little runout. I’ve even had this on a standard chuck insert. As a result I will only buy direct threaded chucks or those with a backplate. Some adapters also leave the chuck sticking out from the bearings a bit too far in my opinion.

That’s a good point actually. If you have a faceplate that fits perhaps it can be machined to fit something like this?

Just a thought.

Brilliant thank you guys, there's a few options to contemplate there! I've discovered one has an insert, the correct threading isn't listed on any sellers website but an email to the company has confirmed it is available so I'll start off with that and see how it goes. Thanks again!
