Skew Angle

Many years ago I bought a Sorby Skew jig for sharpening my chisels. Measuring it, it has an included angle of 44° so it puts a top angle of 22° on a skew chisel. Is this a fairly standard top angle for a skew?

Anywhere between 30 & 40 is fine. There is a lot of hype about angles but to be honest whatever works best for you. I have about 7 skews and I don't think there are two with the same angles a they all get used for different purposes. ,

The short answer is yes, that's quite common!

If you equate that to the common range of angles for spindle gouges being between 40° and 45° it falls in the same range so it makes sense.
