Bread & Butter
« on: April 21, 2021, 12:50:33 PM »
Some pro turners specialise in production work, some in bowls etc. I tend to specialise in tools for traditional fabric crafts many of which afre turned, some carved. . I have been making things now for over a decade but still get people asking me to make things that I have to research. These are an example. Googling didn't work just using the name. Fortunately I was told their purpose at the time of ordering.  One is japanese and the others are traditional tools dating back to at least medieval times. They aren't bobbins or spindles by the way. Anyone ay ideas what they are used for?

Answers on a £50 note please

I have been amazed over the years just how many tools etc are actually made on a lathe or hand carved. Just drop spidles I have 15 different types and there are dozens more. These are all for a specialised form of work though. Very traditional but perhaps not one that is that common.
I'll reveal all later.

Morning world.
For those that are interested (and those that aren't) these are all used in specialised embroidery using gold thread. The one that looks like a chopstick stand is called a 'koma' and is Japanese. It acts as a weight to keep tension in the thjreads. The otjher three are basically traditional tools called 'broches; and date back at least to medieval times. They are used to hold the thread in place in ways that are beyond me, I just make 'em not use them LOL. Wonder what wierd and wonderful tools I will be asked for next.

Interesting. Are you supplied with samples or illustrations to work to?

Usually I am sent an illustration, occasionally some dimensions but then I always research the items so I have at least a basic understanding of their purpose. What they are used for can dictate what type of wood I use and what, if any finish. No good making a navajo spindle which is 30" long and needs to be heavy out of a light weight wood or crochet hooks out of an oily wood for example.
