Two-faced candlesticks
« on: April 18, 2021, 10:55:36 AM »
A pair of candlesticks exploiting the well-known TwoFace/Candlestick (/Vase) 'illusion' - this is normally shown in black and white in 2D (Google if you do not know it).  Obviously the illusion does not work so well in 3D, indeed I doubt that anyone would notice the two faces unless they were pointed out!  But they are fairly clear in the shadows here.  As conceived the candlesticks were to be male and female (the former with moustache) but this does not work very well and these are almost identical.  A trial sketch of the opposite faces (ie facing outwards) did not look very elegant.

Anyway quite simple to do (although the lips are tricky) and different (though I am sure this has been done before).

The wood is Australian Jarrah (eucalyptus) salvaged from an old railway sleeper - it looks good, finishes well and a lovely colour. It is dense and very hard but otherwise machines OK, though a little prone to split and the 'shavings' are not curls but tiny lumps.  Prone to block extractors...
