basket illusion
« on: January 15, 2021, 12:45:28 AM »
I have been having some sciatic nerve nerve trouble so I thought I would give this a try. I found I can turn a plate while sitting. I have a question for anyone has done one of these. I have the D Way burning tips for the spokes. What do you use to burn the circles. I used arborite

I must start by saying that I have no idea what Arborite is nor have I been tempted to make a basket style piece in the past.
I would have thought the edge of a piece of Formica (Perhaps thats another name for Arborite, Who knows?) held onto the spinning wood would burn your rings for you.

I use formica strips to burn on the flat as with your circles. You can do it with a credit / debit card as well

Yes, Arborite is a laminate. No idea what a D Way is though!  ;D

Just a small point, formica et al, does not burn the wood, it melts and leaves a black mark. For burning you need a wire and a fast revolving piece of wood

Wire works on spindle work but you can't use it (as far as I can work out) on any form of face work? I use a piece formica and as long as the speed is high enough haven't noticed any molten residue and have been doing it for a  number of years. Always happy to be corrected if wrong. Maybe depends on the hardness of the wood you are burning?

I found D-Way, but curiously they don’t appear to sell “Burning Tips”?!  ;)
