depends on size I use "normal" pointed wood bits and if bigger then forstner bits, or a gouge, or a long hole auger - depends on what is required

I would normally use a 4mm brad point as a pilot for the larger bits,  then a standard HSS drill bit, I have brad points up to about 7mm but they get very expensive for odd / Imperial sizes like 12.5mm.

12.5mm is not an odd size or expensive if you go to the right place.

I normally buy from their eBay store though. As a part time machinist I often need drill bits in .1mm steps and for decent quality drill bits are no more expensive than any other size.  ;)

I prefer engineers twist drills. I find they work better than the brad point bits which seem to wander more. I bought a set of blacksmith's drill bits which go up to around an inch and as a set weren't that expensive.

Yes I've got a few blacksmiths drills up to about 30mm. They come in pretty handy.

But that was my point 12.5 is easy to buy in standard drill bit, not so easy as a brad point.
