Scented bowl 2
« on: October 03, 2020, 04:51:28 PM »
A variant on the scented grooved bowl I put up a while back.  This one in sandlewood with a clear acrylic lid, roughly cut from clear sheet with a bandsaw and finished on the lathe (sandwiched between softwood circular plates).  The idea of the lid is to contain the scent until the lid is lifted - which seems to work.

The original camphorwood bowl is also shown (it still scents).

One can also sprinkle an essential oil on these - such as lavender oil - although interestingly these fade slowly leaving the original wood scent.

about 125 mm diameter, smoothed and fine sanded but without any coating, for obvious reasons.

For interest a set of 5 smaller 'bowls' also from sandalwood as Christmas gifts. Quick to make - the grooved top (grooves -20mm deep) is made with a parting tool from a set of miniature woodturning tools. There is a recessed chucking point/anti-rock depression on the base around 25mm across.

No coating for obvious reasons - but the wood is dense and waxy and finishes well.

Each supplied with a small bottle of sandalwood essential oil for recharging when necessary (though the wood scent lasts quite well).

seventhdevil - this is sold as  'Tambootie/Sandalwood' from exotic hardwoods.  There are of course various related species but this one does scent, albeit not quite as much as the ancient chest I remember my grandparents had.

A very simple but well thought out and delivered idea. Great idea for stocking fillers at Christmas
