My very first attempt at this. What do you all think? 8" in diameter and 1 1/2" tall

Welcome to the forum Huw.

Nice even distribution of colours some I've seen look like the paint has been thrown at the piece.

Regards Kevin

I'd say that for a first attempt that's pretty good. Never tried this technique, I am probably too much of a control freak and with this the results are left to a fair deal of luck, but this looks nice.

Nice job. Done a few myself. Not keen on the base, but I don’t like mounting recesses. Prefer the base to be smooth and flowing with no sign of a mounting method. Just my opinion.

Hi, I normally use a tenon and then take it off using my Cole Jaws, but as this was my first I wasn't sure if I would damage the surface using Cole Jaws. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers, Huw

Spinning paint effects and using different types of paint, metallic, opalescent as well as the Irradescents can all be used to great effect.

If you want to reverse the platter onto your Coles Jaws, line the face of each plate of the jaws with a coule of layers of masking tape. It softens the contact and raises the paint just ever-so slightly above the metal surface.

I agree. The top demo wood turner at our club says gripping a spigot gives you more foot options.

Did it make much of a mess Huw?!  ;D

A couple of tool marks on the underside but the top looks great. Stewart would like this one !!

This does indeed look great, Huw! Nice job.

With care, there can be a degree of 'certainty' about what the paint will do... if anyone else wants a go, I did a livestream of this on YouTube a couple of weekends ago....it is also very easy to control the mess so your workshop stays pristine ;)

Thanks for the heads up about this post, John Plater!
