Ash hollow form
« on: May 29, 2020, 02:01:42 PM »
A friend of ours owns a field which he is trying to reforest into a strip of woodland connecting some hilltops with a small river in the valley. He told me a few weeks ago that an ash tree had fallen over his fence and whether I wanted some of it. Obviously I said yes, depending on size. So he brought me a piece about 2ft long and 10" diameter. This is what came out of it. Clearly the tree was not healthy at all, but in this case it has also provided the most remarkable colouring I have ever seen in an ash tree. About 8" tall and 6.5" diameter, two coats of oil and a bit of buffing.
As usual, all comments welcome.

That's really beautiful. You brought out the best in the wood. Like the form and the finish :)

The form you’ve chosen really shows off that amazing grain/spalt
I really like it!

The heartwood is dramatic to say the least.
You've turned a great looking hollow-form there from it as well.

Excellent job there, Fuzzy, on a beautiful piece of timber.
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Thanks, gents. The good news is that I managed to get a few more pieces off that tree before the rest was chopped up for firewood.

Wonderful piece of wood there (and turning of course). It sort of looks like an old globe in my mind.
