Couple more pieces
« on: May 19, 2020, 12:09:24 PM »
Not sure where I got the idea for these 'floating Bowls' from but they were very popular at the shpows last year. The first is made from a natural edged plank of spalted hornbeam. It's15 1/2" long, 9 1/2" wide, stands 6" high and has a 6" bowl. The base and suport or japanned (hard black lacquer) . Hardest part os balancing the when gluing up. Second is yew and 12" long and 7" wide with a central bowl of 4" diameter. It stands 6^ (150mm)
C&C welcome as always

I like those. Very sculptural yet still functional. Eye-catching :)

I saw these elsewhere of course and like the elevated effect and balance these create.

Well Pete, I can see the influence of the tv programme Star Trek and the construction of the Enterprise in both forms plus three dimensional chess in the top one - you're a trekkie  ;D

Definitely not a trekky LOL. Vaguely remember the first series with spock amnd that'#s it. Several people have mentioned the resemblance before though . As for three dimensional chess, haven't seen that for years. Used to try and play it on the ships but bad at two domensional so didn't really stabd a chance.

Damn I must be a trekkie, I preferred the second stand instantly, wasn't entirely sure why, didn't realise it was the enterprise until I read your comment!!! went back and yep it is!

More nice pieces, seems pointless to say nice work as it always is, but nice work Pete.
TT, AKA Pete, but that name is taken :-)

Perhaps I shoud label it as 'Enterprise Bowl' in the shop LOL. Open it up to a wider potential market

love these. a quick question if I may. Did you turn away the underside of the bowls to create the 'lip' or was it cut away first with a band saw then turned?
never try to be better than others just better than you were yesterday.

Thank you. The bowl  is all done on the lathe. . The support and base are done on the bandsaw and a sander.

Yet again two very nice pieces Pete. The only thing that I personally am not sure about is the little finial in the first one but then that is just me.

The balance of the pieces is set just right with the long wing over the base as you have done
