Pinch Pots

Decided to make a couple of Salt and Pepper pinch pots but with lids.

The main body has two turned recesses out of Sapele, the lids are American Black Walnut the black knob is African Blackwood and the white is Acrylic as I did not have any real white wood to hand. The base is finished with Mineral oil and the outside then waxed and buffed once dry. the lids got a coat of sander sealer then waxed before the knobs are fitted.

  I had a commission to make some for a Chef local to me and apparently in the trade they are called PIGS.

Indeed....that is a term that has been used widely, not just in the restaurant trade, but especially as a term in the antiques trade. I believe it originates from the large round opening that looks not unlike a pig's snout and they sometimes had a couple of feet on them to cant them upwards....very much in the shape of the tea-caddy on the cover of this month's Woodturning magazine.
