Hello everyone here,

my name is Dimitris Mostras, i am a pipemaker from Greece and i was always fascinated by wood turning and creative things that force you stay in the now, as a matter of fαct the power is in the now.

I am flιrting with 2 wood lathes by the Record Company, CL4 and Coronet. These Lathes is written by the company that they have been produced in Sheffield so i would like to ask for some tips because i am almost ready to buy my first wood lathe and the second lathe in general.

I would like to ask what are the diferences among these 2 wood lathes, which one is for more profesional use than the other?
Do these wood lathes produced in England 100%?
Is there any English web sites for used Record wood lathes or any wood lathes at all ?
Is there an exibition day  from Record company where i can buy an exibition wood lathe at a reduced price or a new one?
Would you recoment an other woodlathe comparing the price and quality of Record Company lathes at this price range?

I would like to turn big bowls, cue shafts-butts, smoking pipes, big vases, etc. Both big, long and small creations.

I present you a photo of my work below, i hope you like it.

Thank you in advance

Dimitris

Dimitris,

hello, and welcome to the Forum.

You ask a who lot of questions, and the answers will be as varied as the people answering them.

But here's my penny's-worth;

I've used the Coronet twice in demo's and am not overly impressed by it, my chucks (standard M33 x 3.5mm thread) have trouble locking onto the headstock properly so of the 2 lathes you note, I'd go for the Record CL4, but I don't think that it would be long enough for you to turn Snooker/Pool Cue butts on, you might need to look closely at the between centre lengths and then subtract the length of chuck or drive centre and the tailstock live centre to actually get near to the 'usable' length.

But yes, they are both made in Sheffield, England.

Don't want to put you off or offer you more choices than you can imagine but you could also look at the Axminster Catalogue (https://www.axminster.co.uk/shop-by-interest/woodturning), or the German Dictum (https://www.dictum.com/en/turning-lathes-bagf) site. The Dictum site has a choice of 6 languages but not Greek I'm afraid, but it may be cheaper to have a Lathe transported from Germany than the UK.

From my experience, Ex Demo lathes don't normally come up for sale to the general public. I know a couple of professional turners who have managed to buy the one they demonstrated for the manufacturer, but Ex factory sales are unusual.

The fact that say you want to turn 'Both big, long and small creations' really means you are looking for a bigger lathe than either of those you have noted. Big items normally need a big motor to turn against your tool cutting action, both the Coronet and the CL4 have 750w (1HP) Motors. I'd recommend you look at 1500W (2HP) motors or even a 2kW motor lathe.

Personal Note:
As I am an (ex) pipe smoker (and I've still got them all put away safely), the pipe you made and show in your picture is absolutely wonderful.

Bryan

Thank you Bryan (dr4g0nfly) for answering all my questions about the 2 Record lathes, i totally agree with you. I tend to be on the CL4 side too, with the bed extension you have 900mm long between centers so for 78-82 cm shafts-butts it will be tricky, from the other hand the coronet extension bed goes to 1000mm so i think it will be ok plus 50mm bigger diameter to turn.

For the CL4 you can find longer steel bars than 900mm in the same dia , and you can upgrade the height of the headstock( not over 50-60mm) and tailstock, but if you upgrade the motor too as you said because of low power you better go for the bigger machines from the beggining because of time and mon€y.

Older CL4 used machines maybe worth all this modifications especially if you live in England! Yesterday ended an auction at 300€ on ebay for a CL4 variable lathe in a very good condition, and i was very sceptical about it + i need 120-150€ only for shipping. Some machines sometimes worth the upgrade.

Bigger machines always is better, and if i had to go bigger i would choose STRATOS FU-230 LV as a complete machine( by the way if anyone has a good price from Germany on STRATOS FU-230 LV please feel free to share), but i am trying to be on my budget here and realise that Record company on the 1000€ limit + shipping has one of the best machines.

From the other hand this is the reason i wrote for help here in this forum so i am glad you participate. Always open to hear more alternatives..:)

one thing to add from what bryan stated (which is all top notch advice) is that i understand you are trying to come in on budget but this may be the occasion where you just have to forget your budget and get the biggest lathe you can afford.

i had a budget when i bought my current lathe and i quickly realised that there was no point to it if you are serious about woodturning. one lathe i was interested in was in my budget and the other not. in the end i bought the one that was not in my budget range and it turned out to be the best decision i ever made.

i use a jet 3520b and love the fact that i bought it.

Hello seventhdevil and thank you for participating, this is the 2nd lathe i am going to buy so i know exacly what you mean and agree with you, i have already a metal lathe from Warco which i use it for small woodturning projects and making smoking pipes too,  i also studied in school cnc operation in the past but i remember a very small amount of info from that part of my life.
We all know using a metal lathe for wooden projects isnt so good idea longterm for the lathe itself.
So here i am in this forum reading and asking for tips.
The wisest thing is for sure to wait untill i can aford a version of big lathes like stratos or axminster and maybe Maxi Record
( what other alternatives on this range of machines and budget do i have?).
From the other hand i can live with the idea buying the smaller version like CL4 especially if i can turn cue sticks, butts and shafts. But i live on the mountains and wood is for free so i have in mind some big projects that i would like to acomplish more for the fun of it rather than the selling part in comparison to other woodturning projects. Its funny but just for the record i would like to mention, that when i once ask a reputably pipe maker what is the favourite stage of working, like finishing or drilling etc, we laughed loud when i heard from the pipemaker that the favourite stage of the process is when the pipe is sold:D. Thank you :)

I don't know if it's of interest but Andy Fortune is selling an ex-demo Record Coronet for £850 on Facebook.

Hello to all creative minds here from sunny Greece,

i have a question for both CL4 by Record wood lathes and Axminster Craft AC370WL:  What is the maximum average kilos can carry for spindle turning and how many for headstock bowl turning each woodlathe? Are there any woodturners here where they had such an experience?

Thank you :)

Goodmorning from Sunny Greece my friends,

i bet that there are a lot of CL1-3-4 owners where they made modifications on their wood lathes. Are there here on this forum any photos in old threads? If you know an upgrade tip about this wood lathes just feel free and shoot it.
There is a CL1 36x15 on ebay and i am wondering if it worths and what are the ups, downs and diferences among all this CL models.

Thank you :)
