Axminster At1628vs - are vibration issues common?
« on: May 25, 2019, 10:29:16 AM »
I've been offered a quite new 'lightly used' 2nd hand AT162vs which offers a modest step up from my Record Power CL4 (new type). Upon a quick initial inspection though the 1628 suffers from some vibration and noise increase from the bearing / pulley area (not the motor). Most noticeable at certain speed points through the range . And without any chuck or wood on it to add load.
My CL4 is 3 years old and still as quiet as it was when new so this is something I had not expected.

If there are any 1628 regular users out there - Is this a common issue with 1628's as they wear in or does it suggest the bearings need replacing? I've used them before at clubs etc and not noticed this to be a particular problem before.
Maybe I should just stay with the CL4 as it hasn't missed a beat since new...
Any input appreciated
Malcolm

From your discription it does sound like a faulty bearing set , assuming nothing is catching / rubbing / come loose etc

I think Axminster offer a 3-year warranty on their lathes. You say it is 'quite new', is it something that could be repaired under guarantee?

I run two of these lathes one of which is 5 1/2 years old and as done a lot of work. There something wrong with the one you have been offer. mine are working without problems.

All the best
