The Black Queen
« on: January 14, 2019, 06:36:16 PM »
Bergenstrauser meets Boris Spassky.
The Black Queen stands 28cm high.
Her cloak is from sandblasted larch with a bit of gilt cream bling.
Her head-dress, head and neck were turned as a triangle hollowform from a cube of sycamore. Finished with Ebonising spray and 'Steampunked' with brass.
Inspired by Daisy Daisy as usual but actually the Prof's entry for a club competition to turn a chess piece.
The Prof is back!!
C&C very welcome
Nick

Interesting, well made and clever as always. Now go and make the rest of the set.

Good morning Nick and good to see another of those pieces which give us an insight into the complx mind of the poyty professor. An intriguing piece which bears all your hallmarks. I'm just wondering; if this were to stand comfortably within its chess-board square, what size would that square need to be and thus, what size would the overall board need to be?

Like it Nick a well thought out piece by the professor.

It would be interesting to see what you would design for the rest of the set if you were to make it ;D

Thank you Pete, Les and Derek for your comments.
The only tricky part of the piece involved turning the sycamore cube into a 6 point double triangle flask. I then decided that there was too much going on and turned the second triangle into a collar.
Les - the piece sits well in a 25cm square - thus a board of 2m square (love the subjunctive - Pete would be proud)
Pete - was that a commission?
Derek - all the other pieces are in the Prof's head but he's a bit of a butterfly and they possibly may not appear!
But he's still obsessed by alchemy and just managed a 'hint of gold' on the last ash flask (180x120mm)
Regards
Nick

Nick, I am seriously coming to believe that you saw a box, once upon a time!

There are people who think differently, and you are one of them. A great interpretation if a Queen, I hope you do well in the Club Comp.

Well Bryan, the judge did for a start ;D ;D ;D ;D

There is a formula for losing club competitions = Challenge preconceptions and leave the odd tooling mark because it's a concept piece and in fairness  ::) ::) she would have scored marks on both criteria.
Best
