Teak
« on: December 12, 2018, 08:22:33 AM »
Hi Everyone

I have been looking for a supplier of Teak for sometime now for a small commission I have waiting. I did manage to obtain some Formosa teak from an old Fire Station door, but I have now run out.

Does anyone know of a supplier around the South Coast that they recommend?

Thanking you in anticipation,  Alan Wallington.

Check our Bryan's (Dragonfly's) post about teak, there are suppliers mentioned. http://www.awgb.co.uk/awgbforum/index.php/topic,5651.0.html

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

To go a bit further than Led did.
My suppliers want to sell whole beams of the stuff, and while they are great prices, they may be more than you need.

But from my post Roger Groom says he has some, maybe he can sell and post you the smaller quantity you need.
Or contact the Cutty Sark trust and see if you can get some smaller offcuts. Too small to palatise but still worthwhile sections of teak at reasonable prices.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Hi Guys
Firstly many thanks for all your replies.

The supplier of my last batch was adamant that it was Formosa teak, but I must admit it does look like Afromosa.

Before the "G plan" revolution of the late sixties and early seventies teak was considered to be a rubbish wood and was often used for hardwood stair cases that were due to be painted. Consequently it was quite plentiful and available for woodturning. Today of course Burmese teak exports are being strictly controlled by the Burmese (believe now renamed) authorities, until a re generation policy is established.

Anyway I will prepare a cutting list for my requirements, and again any recommended suppliers of teak around the South Coast would be greatfully appreciated. The only one I have found is J Howells at Poole.

Best Regards
Alan Wallington

Hi Again

Having a little difficulty driving this site but here goes. I have attached a cutting list and will now try to attach a rather poor photograph. Wish me luck.
