Pens from pencils

A short note on making pens (& pencils!) from bundles of coloured pencils embedded in polyester resin - just fun if slightly tricky!

Try using epoxy resin instead of polyester resin. It acts much better as an adhesive, bonding very well with wood and to itself and does not shrink as much during curing. Get the one which cures more slowly. I haven't used it for coloured pencils but have filled voids machined into surfaces before and I am sure that the same rules apply.

Yes - there is a discussion of this on a US website - the advantage of polyester is that it is fairly liquid and runs easily into the spaces.  It works OK provided that you leave it long enough to fully set!
