ash died hollow form.
« on: February 22, 2018, 06:05:52 PM »
over the last few weeks i have been adding finish to this hollow form and tonight i got the chance to turn the finial. the form is ash and coloured with intrinsic dies. the finial is made from malibur teak and recycled from HMS Trincomalee. this ship was laid down in 1817 so if it is the original timber then it must of started growing about 100 years before that. so could be 300 to 400 years old. the other question is with or without finial. all comments welcome.

Wider,

the form is okay, possibly the shoulder is a little low but it does work.

the finial however is heavy, the bobbin/capstan  below the teardrop is to wide and poorly formed. The top rim needs to be narrower than the bottom rim and the undercut needs to lift the whole finial off of the lid.

Truthfully the form does look far better in the photos without the lid and finial.
