Who wanted a 2" SRG

Some time ago someone asked where you could get a 2"SRG, I found this on one of the Chinese Trade Sites. No idea of the quality, it says HSS, so must have some life in it and at the price might be worth a try.

I'll grant that Chinese turning tools do not have a great reputation. Those £20 sets on eBay are truly awful. However some items they make are worthwhile, the Chinese Quangsheng Planes have made a fantastic name for themselves.

Even if it's not great HSS, it should be better than Carbon Steel, which most of my SRGs are made from.

There is only one way to find out, buy one and try it.

as it happens the replacement one i have is exactly what the link has in it (same HSS stamp on it) so i can say that they seem very good quality tools up there with any others that i have HSS or otherwise...

As long as they don't bend on the tang when you take a very heavy cut.Seen that happen.

people who bend it at the tang are using it wrong in my opinion. i have a bit more that a 45 degree grind on mine and have the tool rest fairly high up so alot of the energy is shooting quite straight down the tool so no bending could ever happen. i also never go more than 1" away from the rest.

Having too mjuch overhang is, I suspect, one of the major causes of tools bending or snapping. We can all get lazy and not move the rest in as we cut away the wood.

The person in question gave up being a woodturner and offered me the chisel (he had hammered it straight by then!) but I turned him down (no pun intended) Imagine? no, makes the blood run cold!!
