« on: January 16, 2018, 07:47:32 AM »
I have a large Australian Burl on my lathe at the moment 26" x 3" and around 20 kilos, I have balanced and turned to round but I am stuck as to what to make, platter, shallow bowl, wall hanging etc. its too nice a piece of timber to get it wrong so suggestions from you creative types please.

Dont feel under pressure to do anything put it aside until you get insperation as you say it is too nice too spoil.
If it was me I think I would give it a lot of thought then make a wall plaque.

I was in the same boat that you now find yourself in, about four years ago and George gave me the same advise then. It worked for me and when I eventually turned my burr, my skills had developed further and the inspiration to make what I had personally thought of made me feel much better about the project.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Yes I think you are right, I will pop this back into storage until I get a light bulb moment.
Many thanks all.

I would leave it somewhere were you can see it then one day you will look at it and think I know what I will do.

Absolutely, I do it all the time.. If a bowl try and core it to gain the most out of the piece.

Lazarus one of my most successful turnings was based on the plate awarded to the ladies wimbledon champion, Maybe a shape like that?

I have a pile of "what can I make out of this piece" just because they are very nice pieces of wood even to the point of having 6 largish chestnut burrs sitting in there waiting just for that light bulb moment

There is always a danger in seeing a lovely piece of wood and just having to do something with it there and then. Best to put on one side until inspiration strikes. Sometimes happens half way through making something, doesn't seem right so stop and come back to it.
