No Signal!
« on: January 12, 2018, 11:43:13 AM »
Inspired by Max Brosi and BBC4's Detectorists.
I was searching for a multi-axis project and chose this form as the first of 3. They all incorporate techniques which I was taught or discovered in 2017.

It is turned from a sycamore cube with 100mm sides. The form is known as a 'tricylinder' with 3 cylinders intersecting at right angles.

The faux rust effect I first used on 'Crucible' and is created from a mixture of artist's sand, plaster of Paris, 'tacky glue' and acrylic paints over a black ebonised base with metallic highlights by dry brush using Rustoleum Gun metal paint.

I dedicate it to Lance and Andy (Detectorists) whose antics gave me much pleasure during recent inactivity post-op.

C&C most welcome
Nick

That rust effect is very realistic, I have to say. Although to some degree I admire Max Brosi's work, I have never felt a desire to try it myself. Having said that, if you didn't tell me, I would have taken this as a piece from Max, so congratulations!

For me this is too realistic.
I appreciate the skill involved but if I wanted a rusty plumbing fitting that is what I would get but very well done.

The skill in this type of turning we always find intriguing Nick....  we would have liked to see a before pic as well
as the finished piece ..... You have captured the rusty look well.
As always its great to see something different.

Thank you all for your very positive comments

George............ I am fortunate in that it is not my living. The thrill is still in the journey from concept to completion. This was conceived as a Metal Detectorist's enigma. Hence the title.

we would have liked to see a before pic as well

How much before Tony & Di? Tree, cube, in progress before final carving, before attack by rust?
Kind Regards Nick

A credit to you, Nick, and I'm sure that Max will be pleased to see it as well.

As someone who goes out detecting I quite like this, I have to ask just where do you go to find out where to make things like this Nick.

Honestly................inside my head. The tricylinder hollow form and many even more complicated works have been the forte of Irish woodtuner Max Brosi. My attempts fall within his shadow.
Apparently there is a YouTube video but I haven't seen it and don't know if mine were done differently.
Thanks for asking
Regards

Very cleaver post turning work. Without you having posted it here, if I'd seen it anywhere else I would have thought it 'Dug up'.
