Sealey SM42 1998
« on: January 06, 2018, 12:35:14 PM »
Hi,
I have been given a Sealey SM42 woodturning lathe and it is missing the spur centre and the live centre please can you advice where the best place is to get these bits.

I believe the thread size is 16 threads per inch by 3/4” diameter.

Many Thanks
Will

For drive spurs and live centres you won't need the thread, they are mounted into the morse tapers. You should be able to google your lathe and find an online or technical details which will give you the MT size (most likely it is MT2). Good places to buy woodturning kit are plenty, e.g. Axminster, Toolpost, Turners Retreat, Olivers Woodturning,...

Try Chronos, https://www.chronos.ltd.uk they are possibly the cheapest for these sort of 'bits'.

With a 16 x 3/4" thread, it will be a 1MT, same as the smaller Record lathes.

Try Googling the AWGB. Then joinyour nearest club and you will be able to ask someone there who, if they are like all other AWGB clubs, will be willig to help you. You never know they may have some second hand parts for you.

Hi
Is there a hole through the spindle? If not then you would need a screwed cap to eject whatever you use as a centre.
I think it may be a one Morse taper ,because the major diameter of the taper and the minor would leave the front end of the thread weak.

Hi
That should read the major diameter of the taper would leave the minor diameter of the thread weak if it were a number two Morse taper

Hi, after looking at the lathe yes I do require a mt1 spur and live centre have ordered a set including both so this should solve the problem. Many thanks to all who replied it is much appreciated. If you have any other advice about this topic please comment. Thank you Will
